FREEZING BUBBLES IN THE FREEZER

IMG_3897.JPGone of our favourite things to do on a frosty morning is freeze bubbles!! Blowing them on cold mornings onto frosty grass results in them freezing into beautiful and delicate icy bubbles which shatter at a touch..

But we didn’t want to wait until the arrival of the cold mornings so we did it in the warmth of the house in the freezer!!
We’d tried before and failed & then found a way of doing it…a simple secret to frozen bubbles without leaving the kitchen…

Here’s how our bubbles turned out..

IMG_3894.JPG
We blew the bubbles in until we got some that settled

IMG_3900.JPGand slowly they froze..

IMG_3898.JPGas we left the freezer door open some of them slowly melted making the spheres mishape and collapse..

IMG_3903.JPG

IMG_3901.JPG

IMG_3902.JPGand when we shut the door for a few minutes the bubbles froze solid and shattered when disturbed..

IMG_3895.JPG

IMG_3896.JPG

But what was the secret?…….small bubbles!! We used little packs of small party favour bubbles and it worked perfectly…

REDISCOVERING SEA DRAGON EGGS.

20140728-122523-44723829.jpg
We discovered sea dragon eggs once before and couldn’t believe our luck when we stumbled over them once again!

Here’s how we got on…

I secretly painted a hard boiled duck egg with sparkly nail varnish and when the kids weren’t looking I placed it in a nest made of seaweed in a small cove along the coast…

20140728-122558-44758445.jpg

20140728-122606-44766285.jpg
I made some dragon footprints leading from the sea shore to the nest..

20140728-122656-44816327.jpg

20140728-122706-44826338.jpg
I then sat on the picnic blanket whilst the kids set out to beach comb…

20140728-122808-44888827.jpg

20140728-122829-44909693.jpg
And then they reappeared from the rocks clutching something…

20140728-123055-45055211.jpg
It was a dragons egg!!!

20140728-123136-45096167.jpg
We examined it…

20140728-123238-45158897.jpgand sniffed it…

20140728-123301-45181502.jpgand Mila took me to see the dragon footprints they’d found..

20140728-123338-45218000.jpgNoah gave the it once over too…

Who’d of thought that we’d stumble over dragon eggs again 😉

SEA DRAGONS

20140721-165021-60621220.jpgDid you know that sea dragons come from the sea on beautiful summer days hiding in the haze of sea mist? They lay their eggs upon the crests of waves that lap against the shore.
These eggs are elusive, and if you are lucky enough you may stumble upon them.
If you are lucky enough to find these elusive and sparkling eggs treat them with care and throw them back into the waves….

We found some sea dragon eggs.

(Shhhhhh… I made our dragon eggs using Jawbreakers and nail varnish and with a dose of slight of hand bought the magic alive)

Here’s how I did it….

I started by given a few jaw breakers a few coats of sparkly nail varnish…

20140721-165400-60840759.jpg

20140721-165407-60847490.jpgwith the aid of a cut sponge and slight of hand I made some dragon tracks…

20140721-165511-60911967.jpgI told Mila about the sea dragons, their elusiveness & how if we looked really carefully we may find traces of them…she picked out things she thought may be evidence…

20140721-165641-61001801.jpgand sure enough with a little gentle guidance she stumbled upon dragon footprints…

20140721-165735-61055434.jpgI lay our eggs in wait as everyone played in the sea with an underlying hope of glimpsing a sea dragon..

20140721-165837-61117355.jpgThe eggs lay where the crest of the waves meets the sun kissed shoreline…

I waited and watched as Mila came out of the sea…

20140721-165955-61195259.jpgand then she stumbled upon the strange sparkly blue eggs…

20140721-170035-61235495.jpg

20140721-170053-61253212.jpg

20140721-170108-61268393.jpgshe listened to them and said she could hear popping…. DRAGON BABIES LEARNING TO SPOUT WATER!!…

20140721-170219-61339165.jpgI lay some more but they were left undiscovered…

20140721-170305-61385316.jpgwe made pictures in the sand of what we thought a water breathing sea dragon would look like..

20140721-170453-61493235.jpgwe kept our sea dragon eggs for the afternoon and then decided to return to the shore and throw them back into the crests of the waves….

20140721-170630-61590511.jpg
It was a magical find and we’ll remember our discovery of sea dragons forever…

BLUEBELLS & BOARS IN THE FOREST OF DEAN

20140506-194622.jpg

Today we headed to the Forest of Dean with the intention of riding our bikes, we loaded up the car and picked up a picnic on the way, on the outskirts of Whitecroft just outside Lydney, heading towards The Forest of Dean on the road from Tescos to Clearwell we were greeted by carpets of blue blazing out from the trees, the bluebells were highly evident from the road, we stopped in a layby and entered the woods, it was beautiful… As we walked through a family of wild boar (7babies) ambled past us, it was a fantastic and unexpected treat….

I don’t think the photos need words, the beauty explains itself…
I probably took way too many photos…

Here’s how our walk in the woods looked….

GARDEN FAIRY POST BOX

20140425-111126.jpg

Imagine finding you have a magical garden fairy mail post box in your garden! All little people will love checking out this secret box each day & finding their very own personal letter from the fairies!

I made this enchanting post box by simply covering a matchbox with coloured paper & celloptape to make it reasonably waterproof, it’s an ideal way to send letters to children directly from the appreciation fairies to congratulate good behaviour, sharing abilities or bravery…. Or just for love ❤️

You could combine it with an adventure into the woods and discover it there, ours was made as a gift for two special little girls…

THE THINKING BOTTLE

20140421-232926.jpg

We headed to the beach to clear our heads and breathe in some sea air, whilst there we stumbled upon Elfina (our Christmas visiting elf) and a Thinking Bottle sent to us from the North Pole by the ocean fairies wave express… Our very special bottle contains a thousand sparkles and twinkles from a million happy times. We shook it loads and it filled us with thoughts of happy times.
(After the loss of a baby within the household a few weeks ago this was an opportunity to provide the siblings with a grieving tool to add a little happy thinking to their minds during a grieving process in which it’s normal & natural to have some sad times…

Everybody should have a Thinking Bottle to reflect on 🙂

Here’s how we stumbled upon our thinking bottle..

The Thinking Bottle….
I filled a bottle with water and glitter, I wrapped material around the lid securing with string and put on a sticker. I also placed some small shells and pebbles inside.

20140421-233010.jpg

The thinking bottle label.

20140421-233055.jpg

Whilst the kids explored the beach I placed Elfina and the thinking bottle.

20140421-233127.jpg

The girls discovered it..

<img src="https://familydaystriedandtestedblog.files.wordpress.com/2014/04/20140421-233204.jpg" a
They were drawn to the one emerald that lay in amongst all the twinkly 'thinks' inside.

20140421-233422.jpg

We balanced stones.

20140421-233503.jpg

Noah explored the rocks with his stubby little hands.

20140421-233540.jpg

We wore wellies on the wrong feet with grazed knees.

20140421-233620.jpg

We made our own solar system with the beach pebbles…. We were the centre of the universe.

20140421-233659.jpg

We found a mermaid purse! Actually a shark egg, it seemed to finish off our magical adventure beautifully… We headed home with our thinking bottle and lots more lovely memories of our afternoon by the ocean…

ABANDONED LIGHTHOUSE ADVENTURE

20140412-204704.jpg

Whiteford Lighthouse and Cwm Ivy Tor are located on the coast at Whiteford Point near Whiteford Sands, on the Gower peninsula, south Wales. The lighthouse is the only remaining cast iron lighthouse surrounded by the sea in the United Kingdom. It was built in 1865. The tower is 61ft high and made up of eight courses of cast iron plates. The light was extinguished in 1921. When the tide is out you are able to walk up to and around the lighthouse. It’s strangely beautiful.

To get there by car: B4295 to Llanrhidian, then C road to Llanmadoc. Continue through the village till you get to Cwm Ivy. A private car park with an honesty box is on the right hand side of the road, once parked head down the hill and through the National Trust gate towards Cwm Ivy Tor. You will come to Burrows cottage on your right nestled in a tall treed forest, head on the path through here and onto the sand dunes beach, you will see the lighthouse in the distance to the right.

Our walk took around 3 hours, beach combing and playing along the way, we found bottled treasure and roman coins which I planted secretly along the route.

Here’s how we got on.

20140412-204730.jpg

20140412-204751.jpg

It was windy and the girls flew their scarves..

20140412-204825.jpg

We found lobster pots and shells..

20140412-204857.jpg

20140412-204905.jpg
We found awesome worm holes..

20140412-204932.jpg
The lighthouse was in the distance..

20140412-205007.jpg
We stumbled over shipwreck remains..

20140412-205039.jpg

20140412-205048.jpg
We explored the shipwreck and then headed towards the lighthouse

20140412-205132.jpg
The closer we got the more impressive it looked..

20140412-205205.jpg

20140412-205220.jpg
When we got closer we discovered the tide had came in around the base of the light house..

20140412-205319.jpg

20140412-205326.jpg
As we were about to leave the lighthouse the girls discovered a bottle of treasure!!!

20140412-205411.jpg
We scooped up the treasure and headed back with the tide chasing us..

20140412-205454.jpg
Beach combing as we went..

20140412-205526.jpg

20140412-205537.jpg
The girls found some gold coins!! (Roman coins I had bought in a castle gift shop for 20p each & secretly placed)

20140412-205639.jpg
We explored the dunes and looked at the way he wind was uncovering buried things..

20140412-205727.jpg

20140412-205830.jpg
Noah played his crab pot drum 🙂

20140412-205856.jpg

20140412-205910.jpg
Then we headed back up over the path through the dunes and the forest to return to the car, we looked at exposed tree roots on the way..

20140412-210018.jpg

20140412-210029.jpg

20140412-210036.jpg

We got back to the car ands enjoyed our flask of tea and yummy biscuits…
It certainly blew the cobwebs away and we collected lots of beach combed treasures….

CAPTURING FLOWER FAIRIES

20140320-095910.jpg
We decided we were going to head to the river bank in the hope of catching a glimpse of some flower fairies..
We took with us some jars with the slim chance that we may even capture our own!
Here’s how we got on.
Armed with a small bottle if fairy dust I set about discreetly dusting some flowers along the riverbank whilst the kids played..

20140320-100116.jpg
One dusted I left them to be stumbled upon.

20140320-100258.jpg
And then Mila found one!!! Evidence of riverbank flower fairies!!

20140320-100355.jpg
So we decided to take it home in our jar.

20140320-100457.jpg

20140320-100508.jpg
To keep flower fairy healthy we knew it was important to fill our jar with water from the river the flowed past where we had discovered our fairies..

20140320-100630.jpg
Our jar was beautiful.

20140320-100702.jpg
We watched the sunshine glistening through the sparkling water as our fairies delicately danced within the jar.

20140320-100809.jpg
Whenever imagined we would find riverbank flower fairies but headed home full if a magical belief that fairies really of exist if you look hard enough and truly believe!

OCEAN FAIRIES MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE

20140320-085738.jpg
I decided I wanted the girls to discover a message in a bottle at the beach, but, with a love for all things magically fairy I decided that our message would be from the ocean fairies and would include some very special ocean wish stones for the girls to cast out their wishes over the waves…
Our fairy adventure took place at Barafundle beach, west Wales.

Here’s what I did…

First I set about making our message, I dampened a cloth and brushed it with blue pen which I then smoothed over a piece of paper. Once dry I ripped around the edged before adding some undersea decoration with a marker pen.

20140320-090254.jpg
Next I wrote our letter from the ocean fairies before spraying with hairspray & dusting with glitter…

20140320-090416.jpg
I then found a suitable bottle (it was a salad dressing bottle) I washed and dried it and then sprayed the inside with hair spray before adding glitter and shaking vigorously..

20140320-090542.jpg

20140320-090614.jpg
I then set about making the ‘ocean wish stones’. For these I simply used a sharpie marker pen to decorate teeny pebbles that would fit into our bottle..

20140320-090731.jpg

20140320-090741.jpg
I dropped the wish stones in and put our message into the bottle and sealed..

20140320-090839.jpg

20140320-090847.jpg

20140320-090854.jpg
Then with the bottle secretly stuffed into my bag we headed to the beach…
Whilst the girls played at the waters edge I discreetly half buried our bottle & left it to be stumbled upon..

20140320-091114.jpg
Eden was the first to spot it..

20140320-091158.jpg

20140320-091215.jpg
And closely followed by Mila we gathered around to open it..

20140320-091306.jpg

20140320-091318.jpg
We read all about the ocean wish stones! So headed to the shore to cast off our wishes..

20140320-091421.jpg

20140320-091433.jpg
We didn’t use all our wishes though…

20140320-091507.jpg
Mila took one home to treasure forever…
