CAKE DECORATION COMPETITION

20140416-101642.jpg

We bought value sponge cakes for 58p each, some sweeties, a block of butter and some icing sugar…we already had food colouring in the cupboard. We made cake stands using a food tin topped with a circle of cardboard covered with a doily, we mixed butter with icing sugar to make the cake covering and icing sugar with water and colouring to make the coloured icing. The kids then decorated their cakes and the winner was announced. A very cheap and yummy activity.

Here’s how we got on..

SKIRRID FAWR MOUNTAIN SUNSET WALK.

20140415-092445.jpg

Skirrid Fawr is a beautiful mountain based in Abergavenny, Mid Wales, it has with stunning 360 views, it’s a real treat for little effort and manageable for the smallest of legs. It’s an ideal walk to watch he sun rise or descend. The woodlands surrounding it are carpeted with flowers.
From the car park we followed the gravel track that took a sharp right bend, we continued along this path and entered the woodland by the stile at the top of track. Follow the obvious path uphill until you reach a wooden gate at the top of the woodland, here you’ll find a bench beneath a huge oak tree, we followed the path to the right and climbed the path, sometimes quite steep, through the woods and all the way to the top.
There are a few different approaches on the way up, we took the most direct and marked route. Can get very muddy in poor weather and a little windy and cold on the top especially as the sun goes down.
Walking boots should ideally be worn as the walk can be a little rocky underfoot but we were fine in wellingtons. Always wear clothing that reflects the weather and even if the sun is shine remember to take some warm clothing in your rucksack as the weather can quickly change on the top. Be sensible, simple common sense is an ideal thing to take with you when walking. Always let someone know where you are going even if it’s through a simple Facebook post. Love the outdoors and always take your litter home.
The route was approx 4 miles from start to finish.
By car: A465 Hereford road bypassing Abergavenny Lef turn onto the B4521 old Monmouth road, car park is 1.5 miles (2.4km) on left (looks like a layby) grid ref: SO328164

We headed up to watch the sun set with cake in tow….

Here’s how we got on.

TIPI BUILDING

20140413-175537.jpg

We found a length of material at a car boot sale and decided to head out to try our hand at tipi building…

We took some string and found an open spot to build, we gathered some long strong branches and began putting it together…

Here’s how we got on..

SPRINGTIME EASTER BATH

20140409-184409.jpg
We decided to create a springtime themed Easter bath time… So we got to work cutting and colouring and collecting things from around the house to turn the bathroom into a haven of yumminess and relaxation…

Here’s what we did…

OUR PREP..

We cut out Easter eggs and coloured them in with permanent marker pens..

20140409-184930.jpg
We cut out flower shapes to make our bath confetti, again we coloured them in with permanent marker pen so the colour wouldn’t run once in the bath..

20140409-185047.jpg
We made a sign for the door..

20140409-185122.jpg
We bought some yummies..

20140409-185209.jpg
We then gathered up plastic plant pots, fake flowers and some plastic eggs we got from Poundland..

THEN WE WERE READY TO PUT IT ALL TOGETHER..
Here’s how it looked..

20140409-185406.jpg

20140409-185456.jpg

20140409-185510.jpg
We sprinkled our confetti…

20140409-185543.jpg

20140409-185557.jpg
Then the kids got in…

CARROT HUNT & RUSTIC PICNIC

20140408-191337.jpg
I decided that I wanted to do a woodland hunt with a difference for the children, I wanted it to include a yummy picnic too.
So with a little imagination, a whole load of carrots, some cake and treats and a flask of soup we headed out for a carrot themed hunt in the woods…

Here’s how we got on…

FIRSTLY I GATHERED EVERYTHING THAT WAS NEEDED…

I bought a carrot cake for £2 in Waitrose & decorated with a packet of bunnies from Poundland, we finished by adding carrots and laying it on a cake stand….

20140408-192230.jpg

20140408-192244.jpg
I made a sign (see above) & placed different coloured elastic bands around our carrots so the kids could hunt for their allocated colours, they also had a ‘golden’ carrot each to find..

20140408-192457.jpg

20140408-192515.jpg
I filled some plastic plant pots with loot to be rewarded to the finders of the golden carrots..

20140408-192627.jpg

20140408-192642.jpg
Lastly I gathered a picnic blanket, a flask of soup and bread and loaded up our baskets to take to the woods..

20140408-192755.jpg

20140408-192811.jpg

WITH EVERYTHING PREPARED WE WERE READY TO SET OUT!!!

The best way to carry everything was in a wheelbarrow..

20140408-192946.jpg

Whilst the kids headed off to explore the woodland I set up…
Firstly I placed the sign..

20140408-193056.jpg
And laid the picnic..

20140408-193156.jpg

20140408-193210.jpg

20140408-193221.jpg
I then set about hiding the carrots..

20140408-193303.jpg

20140408-193336.jpg

20140408-193345.jpg
Then the kids set about on their hunt..

20140408-193511.jpg

20140408-193522.jpg

20140408-193531.jpg
And they were fruitful!!

20140408-193843.jpg
And when they had counted up their loot they were able to head off and search for their reward pots for finding the golden carrots…

20140408-193946.jpg

20140408-194017.jpg
All that was left to do was dig into our rustic picnic… YUMMY!!

20140408-194118.jpg

20140408-194132.jpg

20140408-194147.jpg

We had a fab time with a bucket load of carrots and a simple picnic…

MILK CARTON BUTTERFLIES

20140408-163442.jpg
Full of the joys of spring and with a lovely blue sky overhead we decided we wanted to bring some colour to the trees…
So we made some beautiful butterflies…

Here’s how we did it..

We washed out some empty milk cartons.

20140408-163727.jpg
I then carefully cut the carton into strips and drew butterflies on them for the kids to carefully cut out..

20140408-163820.jpg
Once we had our shapes we coloured our butterflies in with permanent marker pens..

20140408-163921.jpg
They looked great! We stuck some gems to some of them..

20140408-164011.jpg
We finished by poking a paper clip through each one to hang in the trees.

20140408-164108.jpg
We then set about hanging them in the trees..

20140408-164151.jpg
They looked BEAUTIFUL 🙂

PREHISTORIC ICE AGE MELTDOWN CHALLENGE

20140405-085822.jpgWe decided we were going to make our own prehistoric ice age scene and attempt to save our prehistoric friends from the big freeze.
We had lots of fun and messy play with a little scientific education thrown in…
Here’s how we got on.

I froze some dinosaurs in a bowl to make our ice age lake..

20140405-090042.jpgI froze some smaller dinosaurs in plastic eggs and once frozen I ran them under a little warm water to loosen then from the egg case.

20140405-090145.jpg
I placed our diplodocus into a water filled ziplock bag before placing it into the freezer, once frozen I ran it under warm water to mould the ice around him..

20140405-090307.jpg
I then placed all our iced induced dinosaurs into a tray surrounded by soil and leaves.

20140405-090410.jpg
We then collected some kitchen household items to use to try and thaw our prehistoric friends from the big freeze!

20140405-090529.jpg
We tried with ketchup, vinegar, salt, baking powder and lemon juice along with banging, scraping, chipping and bashing…

20140405-090657.jpg

20140405-090704.jpg

20140405-090717.jpg
Finally with a little warm water our dinosaurs began to slowly escape..

20140405-090817.jpg
AND THEN THEY WERE FREE!!!

20140405-090858.jpg
We had lots of fun experimenting…

20140405-090930.jpg
And made LOADS of mucky mud squelching prehistoric mess!!!

PERSONALISED PAPER GARDEN LANTERNS

20140405-084827.jpg
We made some beautiful garden lanterns, we personal used them ourselves with felt tip pens.

Here’s how we made them…

We bought a 3 pack of basic white paper lanterns from Poundland…

20140405-085031.jpg

20140405-085041.jpg
We then used felt tip pens to decorate them with designs and doodles…

20140405-085123.jpg

20140405-085130.jpg
They looked fab when finished!

20140405-085218.jpg
We finished by popping in a battery operated tea light, these can also be bought in Poundland, a pack of 4 for £1.

BUTTERFLY HUNTING

20140330-111643.jpg
We decided to embark on our own butterfly hunt, we made butterflies to lay along our route & gathered up our nets, magnifying glass and a book to identify our discoveries. Our hunt took place at the beautiful Heddons Mouth in Devon, a beautiful walk through a wooded valley to an idyllic picturesque beach cove. I even managed to buy some chocolate butterflies and bugs at the National Trust shop at the beginning of our walk to have as a surprise once we got to the beach..
Here’s how we got on…

We started by making our butterflies which I would then secretly place in the bushes along our route..>

20140330-112422.jpg
With our nets in hand we set off..>

20140330-112557.jpg

20140330-112626.jpg
I hid our butterflies along the way..>

20140330-112718.jpg
and the kids found them..>

20140330-112803.jpg
along with lots of real butterflies..>

20140330-112845.jpg

20140330-112856.jpg

20140330-112904.jpg we even caught some in our bug observatories to get a closer look..>

20140330-113009.jpg
We carried on the marked route and made our way down to the beach..>

20140330-113119.jpg

20140330-113129.jpg
>

20140330-113324.jpg
It was a beautiful pebble beach..

20140330-113354.jpg
And once we arrived I carefully placed our yummy chocolate treats whilst the kids carried on with their search..
>

20140330-113500.jpg

20140330-113541.jpg

20140330-113551.jpg
They soon discovered the chocolate butterflies!!>

20140330-113747.jpg

20140330-113800.jpg
As we headed back through the woods we looked out for signs of butterflies and found evidence of hungry caterpillers..>

20140330-114044.jpg
Finally we collected leaves, petals and twigs to make our own beautiful butterfly!!>

20140330-114157.jpg

SEARCHING FOR RAINBOWS

20140329-100310.jpg

We decided to go on a search for the colours of the rainbow! We choose a day where the weather was forecast for sunny spells and showers in hope of finding a rainbow… We did indeed find a rainbow on our adventure and even a pot of gold at the end!!

Here’s how we got on.

We headed out under a beautiful BLUE sky…

20140329-094748.jpg
We headed towards a Lavender PYO farm but kept our eye out for colours on the way…
We found a field of GREEN..>

20140329-094914.jpg
and a field of PURPLE..>

20140329-095050.jpg
We ate RED apples, found ORANGE flowers, PINK flowers & glorious YELLOW sunflowers..>

20140329-095232.jpg
We embraced all the colours we could find..>

20140329-095333.jpg

20140329-095714.jpg

20140329-095731.jpg
And then it started to rain!!! And we embraced that too..
>

20140329-095912.jpg
And with the rain we found our RAINBOW!!!
>

20140329-100010.jpg
And of course whilst the kids danced in the rain it gave me ample opportunity with slight of hand so lay a pot of gold for them to discover 🙂
Our colour was a great success made even more beautiful by the luck of ending the day under a rainbow 🙂 >
