DINOSAURS CAUSING HAVOC

20140522-131902.jpg

If you haven’t stumbled upon it already you really must check out Dinovember, I’m telling you, we all need a little bit of it in our lives, the concept is to feed the kids with a little imagination with dinosaurs, while they sleep you place the dinosaurs for them to discover when they awake, it’s a little bit of magic and a whole lot of fun…

Here’s some of the antics that our household dinosaurs have got up to!
They’re a bit pesky at times….

20140522-131541.jpg
We awoke to find they’d raided the sweetie tin…

20140522-131711.jpg

A mammoth task….with peer pressure & group influences kicking in it appears the larger dino’s have had a ball shaving off all mammoths hair, he is no longer wooly & I fear he would not survive an ice age….only time will tell.

20140522-131810.jpg

One night the Dino’s headed to the kitchen seemingly to cook up a feast & it appears that we have a good mix of both carnivores & herbivores nocturnally roaming free…

20140522-131950.jpgOur third night of Dinovember was rather fitting to the 9 year olds first attempt at shaving secretly in his bedroom & pays tribute to Movember.

20140522-132253.jpgTeenage protest…. Another night our dinosaurs were aimed at the teenagers in the house. As the protest was going on in the fridge it was hoped it would act as a prevention from it getting overly heated.

20140522-132511.jpg

It appears that last night those pesky dinosaurs got into the medical kit…. It looks like some of them may even be medically trained… Pesky creatures….

20140522-132620.jpg

One morning there were no dinosaurs. Instead we found this on the kitchen floor & an intact one within the box of eggs on the side…. It spelt trouble…..

20140522-132711.jpg

20140522-132718.jpg

To try and avoid the ice age the Dino’s headed for the oven..

20140522-132810.jpg

We had’nt seen the dinosaurs for a couple of nights but they then returned with a ravenous attitude, thankfully the rhubarb pie I bought on the reduced section at Tesco was only 10p. Still, cheeky buggers though.

20140522-132915.jpgThe kids weren’t to impressed when they awoke to discover the dinosaurs had devoured their advent calendars..

20140522-133017.jpgThey even got into the nappy changing bag much to the delight of the toddler who discovered them..

20140522-133125.jpg
We awoke one morning to discover the dinosaurs had been up to no good & taken a shine to a box of chocolates…

20140522-133212.jpg

20140522-133218.jpg

Once the dinosaurs in the house were I little bit influenced by our artistic goings on & got together to recreate their own views of our recent art attempts….those pesky dinosaurs!!

20140522-133516.jpgThose pesky dinosaurs were caught out again, and although i have to say their sun cream applying ability needs improving we’ve gotta give them credit for being sunshine sensible with a high factor!
A few days of decent sunshine & they think it’s Summer!

The dinosaur antics have been a great and magical addition to our family thanks to the inspiration from Dinovember & you can check out and join in the fun over on their fb page https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1411663649067953&ref=ts&fref=ts

FAIRY FUN IN A BLUEBELL WOOD

20140418-003251.jpgWe decided we were going to have a fairy day and head out to find some bluebell carpeted woods, before we went we made some picnic stick bundles, rustic
fairy wands and beautiful fabric fairy wings. Once there we carved toadstools and made fairy doors, danced in the bluebells to entice out the woodland fairies and made a bluebell perfume potion which we sprinkled on the woodland floor, we cast our spells with our fairy wands and were lucky enough to find some real evidence of fairies just as we were leaving…. ✨
Our afternoon was spent in Cockshoot wood, Itton Road. Chepstow.

**please note the only bluebells we used were broken ones we found & as tempting as it was to scoop a thousand up we did not pick any still growing.

 Here’s how we got on..

Our prep….
We started making our fabric fairy wings by cutting out a wing shape from an old sheet making sure to leave lengths to attach to the wrists and neck..

20140418-003435.jpg

We decorated our wings with a selection of paint that we had in the art box, you could use fabric paint to ensure they last.

20140418-003511.jpg

Trying on our dried wings..

20140418-003547.jpg

We made a rustic fairy wand by attaching ribbons to a stick with a hair bobble.

20140418-003625.jpg

Testing our rustic fairy wand.

20140418-003705.jpg

Our picnic bundle sticks, individual picnic spots..

20140418-003829.jpg

Bundled up and tied to the stick..

20140418-003918.jpg

We headed out to search for a bluebell wood..

20140418-004000.jpg

We found flowers but they weren’t quite blue…

20140418-004047.jpg

20140418-004055.jpg

Noah found sticks..

20140418-004129.jpg

And then we found bluebells!!

20140418-004217.jpg

Mila was happy

20140418-004258.jpg

The girls set about collecting bluebells to make some bluebell perfume to entice the flower fairies out onto the woodland floor..

20140418-004338.jpg

20140418-004359.jpg

They mixed their bluebell potion..

20140418-004443.jpg
I discretely put in a sprinkling of fairy dust and hid it by laying a few bluebells on top, the girls then added their flowers to the jar along with water and mixed… They thought it was fairy magic when they mixed it and the potion turned sparkly..

20140418-004527.jpg

We found some cool trees..

20140418-004626.jpg

20140418-004616.jpg

Elis carved a mushroom whilst the girls put together a fairy door.

20140418-004707.jpg

20140418-004739.jpg

I secretly sprinkled some fairy dust onto a flower for the girls to stumble upon…real evidence of fairies!!

20140418-004821.jpg

Mila ran around casting woodland spells to entice the fairies out..

20140418-004902.jpg

With our spells cast, bluebells found, fairy doors built & evidence of fairies stumbled upon we headed home..

PIRATEY EXPLORATIONS AT WORMS HEAD..

20140330-164110.jpg
We decided to have a piratey adventure & go off in search of pirate loot & treasures, with a jar if chocolate coins and broken necklaces in my pocket we headed out… On this occassion we did not make it over to the island but we did return and carry out our adventure again at a later date…
Here’s how we got on…

Our adventure took place looking out to The Worms Head… Rhossili Bay. This was our intended island to explore, when we got there we had to wait until low tide to be able to cross the causeway, our window of opportunity was late in the afternoon so did not give us enough time to explore fully before the sunset and darkness descended so I decided to do our pirate treasure discoveries on the coastline side of the causeway. Once you establish what time low tide is you have 2.5hrs either side to cross the causeway without being cut off.

20140330-164452.jpg

The causeway path covered in ocean at high tide…

20140330-164529.jpg
Because the tide took its time to recede (tidal times are still a dependant on mother natures plans, today’s given tide was at least 45 minutes off predicted times) we sat and watched the seals and dolphins circling the island, these were the guardians of the islands treasure

20140330-164602.jpg
We made our way down to the start of the causeway that heads out to the island, once there the kids set off to explore the rocky beach and rockpools given me chance to secretly place chocolate coins in rock crevices for the kids to stumble upon. (Budgens, 2 bags for £1)

20140330-164828.jpg

I placed some coins and pearl beads off of a bracelet into a jar and used my permanent marker to draw a pirate skull on the lid…

20140330-164913.jpg

Mila discovered the loot!!!

20140330-164943.jpg

I bought a giant chocolate coin that coincidently had a pirate ship design on it, available in Sainsburys as part of their Christmas range, £2 each

20140330-165015.jpg

The beach was littered in ankle deep amounts of shells, discarded by mermaids…

20140330-165044.jpg

Mila spotted the loot glinting in the sunshine….

20140330-165113.jpg

TREASURE!!!

20140330-165149.jpg
We found a shipwreck sticking out of the sand. The ocean-stripped oak carcass of the Helvetia shipwreck is today an easily located wreck, swept precariously around Worm’s Head into the shallow waters of Rhossili Bay…. The kids preferred it to be a prehistoric sea serpent looking over the pirate island..

20140330-165310.jpg

We thought the shells looked like butterflies so we made a flower..

20140330-165345.jpg

As the sun went down we took some time to sit and reflect on our day and write a poem as we looked over to the island where Dylan Thomas had sat and wrote many of his looking back at the shoreline for inspiration.

20140330-165510.jpg

We didn’t make it over to the island on this occasion (but we did return!) which made the mystery and enchantment of it’s closely guarded secrets a good old piratey tale to tell…. As the sun went down we ate our chocolatey loot and reflected on a good day and made plans for our return 🙂

JUNK BAND

20140325-171602.jpg
We decided we wanted to make our own instruments with things we had around the house..
Here’s what we did…

We used some balloons which we’d cut the neck off and stretched over beakers to make our drums…

20140325-171754.jpg
We used the neck ends of our balloons to make our duck quaker kazoos, we cut a piece of lollipop stick to approx an inch and stretched the end of the balloons over them..

20140325-171928.jpg

20140325-171943.jpg
We put some uncooked rice in a dry bottle to make our maracas..

20140325-172027.jpg
Our square guitars were made using the lid from a Ferraro Roche box which we stretched elastic bands over..

20140325-172146.jpg
Finally, all good bands have a leader so we made a loud speaker for them using a milk carton..

20140325-172302.jpg

Our instruments were really simple to make and very noisy and we had lots of fun…

CAPTURING FLOWER FAIRIES

20140320-095910.jpg
We decided we were going to head to the river bank in the hope of catching a glimpse of some flower fairies..
We took with us some jars with the slim chance that we may even capture our own!
Here’s how we got on.
Armed with a small bottle if fairy dust I set about discreetly dusting some flowers along the riverbank whilst the kids played..

20140320-100116.jpg
One dusted I left them to be stumbled upon.

20140320-100258.jpg
And then Mila found one!!! Evidence of riverbank flower fairies!!

20140320-100355.jpg
So we decided to take it home in our jar.

20140320-100457.jpg

20140320-100508.jpg
To keep flower fairy healthy we knew it was important to fill our jar with water from the river the flowed past where we had discovered our fairies..

20140320-100630.jpg
Our jar was beautiful.

20140320-100702.jpg
We watched the sunshine glistening through the sparkling water as our fairies delicately danced within the jar.

20140320-100809.jpg
Whenever imagined we would find riverbank flower fairies but headed home full if a magical belief that fairies really of exist if you look hard enough and truly believe!

BUILDING FAIRY HOUSES

20140320-093434.jpg
We decided we wanted to build some natural fairy houses so we set about gathering materials..

20140320-093524.jpg
We built a frame using sticks & string..

20140320-093610.jpg
And then we set about decorating the inside, we used pieces of stick which we tied string around to make our ladder.

20140320-093648.jpg
We pushed sticks into an apple to make a window frame for an apple out house.

20140320-093812.jpg
We used cardboard and sticks to make out doors and windows..

20140320-093850.jpg
We used mushrooms for our furniture and a flower to make a flower fairy .

20140320-093935.jpg
We finished off by decorating our house with flowers…

20140320-094023.jpg

OCEAN FAIRIES MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE

20140320-085738.jpg
I decided I wanted the girls to discover a message in a bottle at the beach, but, with a love for all things magically fairy I decided that our message would be from the ocean fairies and would include some very special ocean wish stones for the girls to cast out their wishes over the waves…
Our fairy adventure took place at Barafundle beach, west Wales.

Here’s what I did…

First I set about making our message, I dampened a cloth and brushed it with blue pen which I then smoothed over a piece of paper. Once dry I ripped around the edged before adding some undersea decoration with a marker pen.

20140320-090254.jpg
Next I wrote our letter from the ocean fairies before spraying with hairspray & dusting with glitter…

20140320-090416.jpg
I then found a suitable bottle (it was a salad dressing bottle) I washed and dried it and then sprayed the inside with hair spray before adding glitter and shaking vigorously..

20140320-090542.jpg

20140320-090614.jpg
I then set about making the ‘ocean wish stones’. For these I simply used a sharpie marker pen to decorate teeny pebbles that would fit into our bottle..

20140320-090731.jpg

20140320-090741.jpg
I dropped the wish stones in and put our message into the bottle and sealed..

20140320-090839.jpg

20140320-090847.jpg

20140320-090854.jpg
Then with the bottle secretly stuffed into my bag we headed to the beach…
Whilst the girls played at the waters edge I discreetly half buried our bottle & left it to be stumbled upon..

20140320-091114.jpg
Eden was the first to spot it..

20140320-091158.jpg

20140320-091215.jpg
And closely followed by Mila we gathered around to open it..

20140320-091306.jpg

20140320-091318.jpg
We read all about the ocean wish stones! So headed to the shore to cast off our wishes..

20140320-091421.jpg

20140320-091433.jpg
We didn’t use all our wishes though…

20140320-091507.jpg
Mila took one home to treasure forever…

HUNTING FOR SHED FAIRY WINGS

20140320-081255.jpg
Did you know that fairies shed their wings at seasons change? This is done as the night turns to day whilst the sunshine delicately chases the dancing moonlight away and if you are really lucky you may just be able to find these elusive fallen wings that have fell intact onto beds of glistening morning dew drops….
Our magical adventure all began with the discovery of a letter hidden within a book about fairies which we read at bedtime….. this was the start of our hunt for shed fairy wings.
I started by writing a letter to secretly place within our bedtime storybook for the girls to find…

20140320-081459.jpg
I dusted it with fairy glitter, folded it and placed it in our fairy book. (Our fairy book was one I had stumbled upon in a charity shop)

20140320-081614.jpg
Meanwhile I secretly made our fairy wings, I made two types, firstly I walked through the woods to find some delicate skeletal leaves which I carefully cut into wing shapes, sprayed with hairspray & dusted with glitter. The second set of wings were simply a beautiful coloured autumn leaf, once again cut into a wing shape and dusted with glitter.

20140320-082110.jpg

20140320-082119.jpg
At bedtime we read our book, discovered our letter and I filled Milas 5 year old mind with tales of woodland and mountain fairies and a magical enthusiasm that we could find some fairy evidence for ourselves….
So with our fairy wings discreetly tucked away we headed out under the cover of darkness in search of seasonal change fairy wings….
Here’s how our hunt went.
We decided to head to the mountains, we arrived whilst the light in the sky was changing from dusk to dawn and the sun was starting to appear…

20140320-082457.jpg
Mila led the way with her fairy book which coincidently had a map within it..

20140320-082631.jpg

20140320-082649.jpg
We found evidence of fairies…
Mushrooms..

20140320-082741.jpg
Dew drops that were suitable to catch fallen wings..

20140320-082831.jpg
We even looked for water fairies..

20140320-082914.jpg

20140320-082925.jpg

And then!! Just as the sun was peeping through to greet the morning and the moon was descending with the darkness we spotted something!!!

20140320-083045.jpg
There they lay! Glistening in the dawn sunrise and just as we had read, laying on a bed of dewdrops!!!
FAIRY WINGS!!!

20140320-083158.jpg
We delicately scooped up our precious & elusive find! They were real! Dropped by fairies!! Found by US!!
Beautiful autumnal fairy wings… shed within seasons change.

20140320-083348.jpg
Full to the brim of fairy magic & a imagination that sparkled with the treasures within our pockets we headed home….

20140320-083513.jpg
