ILLUMINATING CARTON FAIRY VILLAGE

✨We decided to build a fairy village at the bottom of the garden…

Here’s how we got on..

We used empy juice cartons and a milk carton, we started by covering the cartons with some quick drying white gloss which we had in the shed .

we drew on our windows and doors and I carefully cut them out..

we used permanent sharpie marker pens to decorate our houses once the paint was dry.

We drew and cut out some clothes for a clothes line too..

Lastly we used a string of battery operated fairy lights which we fed through the houses to magically light up our village ..

We made some fairy donuts using icing & sprinkles to put in our fairy cafe when we placed our village in the garden..

GARDEN FAIRY POST BOX

20140425-111126.jpg

Imagine finding you have a magical garden fairy mail post box in your garden! All little people will love checking out this secret box each day & finding their very own personal letter from the fairies!

I made this enchanting post box by simply covering a matchbox with coloured paper & celloptape to make it reasonably waterproof, it’s an ideal way to send letters to children directly from the appreciation fairies to congratulate good behaviour, sharing abilities or bravery…. Or just for love ❤️

You could combine it with an adventure into the woods and discover it there, ours was made as a gift for two special little girls…

THE THINKING BOTTLE

20140421-232926.jpg

We headed to the beach to clear our heads and breathe in some sea air, whilst there we stumbled upon Elfina (our Christmas visiting elf) and a Thinking Bottle sent to us from the North Pole by the ocean fairies wave express… Our very special bottle contains a thousand sparkles and twinkles from a million happy times. We shook it loads and it filled us with thoughts of happy times.
(After the loss of a baby within the household a few weeks ago this was an opportunity to provide the siblings with a grieving tool to add a little happy thinking to their minds during a grieving process in which it’s normal & natural to have some sad times…

Everybody should have a Thinking Bottle to reflect on 🙂

Here’s how we stumbled upon our thinking bottle..

The Thinking Bottle….
I filled a bottle with water and glitter, I wrapped material around the lid securing with string and put on a sticker. I also placed some small shells and pebbles inside.

20140421-233010.jpg

The thinking bottle label.

20140421-233055.jpg

Whilst the kids explored the beach I placed Elfina and the thinking bottle.

20140421-233127.jpg

The girls discovered it..

<img src="https://familydaystriedandtestedblog.files.wordpress.com/2014/04/20140421-233204.jpg" a
They were drawn to the one emerald that lay in amongst all the twinkly 'thinks' inside.

20140421-233422.jpg

We balanced stones.

20140421-233503.jpg

Noah explored the rocks with his stubby little hands.

20140421-233540.jpg

We wore wellies on the wrong feet with grazed knees.

20140421-233620.jpg

We made our own solar system with the beach pebbles…. We were the centre of the universe.

20140421-233659.jpg

We found a mermaid purse! Actually a shark egg, it seemed to finish off our magical adventure beautifully… We headed home with our thinking bottle and lots more lovely memories of our afternoon by the ocean…

FAIRY FUN IN A BLUEBELL WOOD

20140418-003251.jpgWe decided we were going to have a fairy day and head out to find some bluebell carpeted woods, before we went we made some picnic stick bundles, rustic
fairy wands and beautiful fabric fairy wings. Once there we carved toadstools and made fairy doors, danced in the bluebells to entice out the woodland fairies and made a bluebell perfume potion which we sprinkled on the woodland floor, we cast our spells with our fairy wands and were lucky enough to find some real evidence of fairies just as we were leaving…. ✨
Our afternoon was spent in Cockshoot wood, Itton Road. Chepstow.

**please note the only bluebells we used were broken ones we found & as tempting as it was to scoop a thousand up we did not pick any still growing.

 Here’s how we got on..

Our prep….
We started making our fabric fairy wings by cutting out a wing shape from an old sheet making sure to leave lengths to attach to the wrists and neck..

20140418-003435.jpg

We decorated our wings with a selection of paint that we had in the art box, you could use fabric paint to ensure they last.

20140418-003511.jpg

Trying on our dried wings..

20140418-003547.jpg

We made a rustic fairy wand by attaching ribbons to a stick with a hair bobble.

20140418-003625.jpg

Testing our rustic fairy wand.

20140418-003705.jpg

Our picnic bundle sticks, individual picnic spots..

20140418-003829.jpg

Bundled up and tied to the stick..

20140418-003918.jpg

We headed out to search for a bluebell wood..

20140418-004000.jpg

We found flowers but they weren’t quite blue…

20140418-004047.jpg

20140418-004055.jpg

Noah found sticks..

20140418-004129.jpg

And then we found bluebells!!

20140418-004217.jpg

Mila was happy

20140418-004258.jpg

The girls set about collecting bluebells to make some bluebell perfume to entice the flower fairies out onto the woodland floor..

20140418-004338.jpg

20140418-004359.jpg

They mixed their bluebell potion..

20140418-004443.jpg
I discretely put in a sprinkling of fairy dust and hid it by laying a few bluebells on top, the girls then added their flowers to the jar along with water and mixed… They thought it was fairy magic when they mixed it and the potion turned sparkly..

20140418-004527.jpg

We found some cool trees..

20140418-004626.jpg

20140418-004616.jpg

Elis carved a mushroom whilst the girls put together a fairy door.

20140418-004707.jpg

20140418-004739.jpg

I secretly sprinkled some fairy dust onto a flower for the girls to stumble upon…real evidence of fairies!!

20140418-004821.jpg

Mila ran around casting woodland spells to entice the fairies out..

20140418-004902.jpg

With our spells cast, bluebells found, fairy doors built & evidence of fairies stumbled upon we headed home..

CAPTURING FLOWER FAIRIES

20140320-095910.jpg
We decided we were going to head to the river bank in the hope of catching a glimpse of some flower fairies..
We took with us some jars with the slim chance that we may even capture our own!
Here’s how we got on.
Armed with a small bottle if fairy dust I set about discreetly dusting some flowers along the riverbank whilst the kids played..

20140320-100116.jpg
One dusted I left them to be stumbled upon.

20140320-100258.jpg
And then Mila found one!!! Evidence of riverbank flower fairies!!

20140320-100355.jpg
So we decided to take it home in our jar.

20140320-100457.jpg

20140320-100508.jpg
To keep flower fairy healthy we knew it was important to fill our jar with water from the river the flowed past where we had discovered our fairies..

20140320-100630.jpg
Our jar was beautiful.

20140320-100702.jpg
We watched the sunshine glistening through the sparkling water as our fairies delicately danced within the jar.

20140320-100809.jpg
Whenever imagined we would find riverbank flower fairies but headed home full if a magical belief that fairies really of exist if you look hard enough and truly believe!

BUILDING FAIRY HOUSES

20140320-093434.jpg
We decided we wanted to build some natural fairy houses so we set about gathering materials..

20140320-093524.jpg
We built a frame using sticks & string..

20140320-093610.jpg
And then we set about decorating the inside, we used pieces of stick which we tied string around to make our ladder.

20140320-093648.jpg
We pushed sticks into an apple to make a window frame for an apple out house.

20140320-093812.jpg
We used cardboard and sticks to make out doors and windows..

20140320-093850.jpg
We used mushrooms for our furniture and a flower to make a flower fairy .

20140320-093935.jpg
We finished off by decorating our house with flowers…

OCEAN FAIRIES MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE

20140320-085738.jpg
I decided I wanted the girls to discover a message in a bottle at the beach, but, with a love for all things magically fairy I decided that our message would be from the ocean fairies and would include some very special ocean wish stones for the girls to cast out their wishes over the waves…
Our fairy adventure took place at Barafundle beach, west Wales.

Here’s what I did…

First I set about making our message, I dampened a cloth and brushed it with blue pen which I then smoothed over a piece of paper. Once dry I ripped around the edged before adding some undersea decoration with a marker pen.

20140320-090254.jpg
Next I wrote our letter from the ocean fairies before spraying with hairspray & dusting with glitter…

20140320-090416.jpg
I then found a suitable bottle (it was a salad dressing bottle) I washed and dried it and then sprayed the inside with hair spray before adding glitter and shaking vigorously..

20140320-090542.jpg

20140320-090614.jpg
I then set about making the ‘ocean wish stones’. For these I simply used a sharpie marker pen to decorate teeny pebbles that would fit into our bottle..

20140320-090731.jpg

20140320-090741.jpg
I dropped the wish stones in and put our message into the bottle and sealed..

20140320-090839.jpg

20140320-090847.jpg

20140320-090854.jpg
Then with the bottle secretly stuffed into my bag we headed to the beach…
Whilst the girls played at the waters edge I discreetly half buried our bottle & left it to be stumbled upon..

20140320-091114.jpg
Eden was the first to spot it..

20140320-091158.jpg

20140320-091215.jpg
And closely followed by Mila we gathered around to open it..

20140320-091306.jpg

20140320-091318.jpg
We read all about the ocean wish stones! So headed to the shore to cast off our wishes..

20140320-091421.jpg

20140320-091433.jpg
We didn’t use all our wishes though…

20140320-091507.jpg
Mila took one home to treasure forever…

SEARCHING FOR FROST FAIRIES..

20140305-105410.jpg

Todays walk was just that, just a walk with no real plan, just going with the wind 🙂
But we did have one mission in mind and that was to try to find evidence of frost fairies & ice queens. We set out early morning as the sun rose & passed lots of frost whilst in the car but when we arrived at our destination there was none, so we improvised & made it up as we went along…we headed for Talybont in the Brecon Beacons….. It was a good day & made lovely by the company of big little miss FD (16). We had a few disputes with a 16 year old versus a 9 year old in the back of the car but in fairness I expected worse. It was a lovely day in late November.

We did find evidence of frost fairies on our adventure much to the enchantment of the 2,5 & 8 year olds 😉
Here’s how our adventure went…

We stopped at the bottom of Tor y Foel, Talybont and found ice in a mucky puddle. It was our first sign that we may be fruitful in finding evidence of frost fairies.

20140305-105440.jpg

We then drove onto Talybont waterfalls walk…hopefully to find some fairy evidence…

20140305-105510.jpg

It was beautiful.

20140305-105553.jpg

If you would like to follow more of our daily frugal memory making activities & adventures during a childhood that’s fleeting you can find us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/pages/Family-days-Tried-tested/287237957955725?ref=tn_tnmn

Then we found lots evidence of a fairy enviroment.

We found funghi…promising for our hunt.

20140305-105624.jpg

We found signs of squirrel eaten lunch.. or breakfast

20140305-105701.jpg

We walked across logs.

20140305-105756.jpg

We watched water falling, and kept our eye out for water fairies…

20140305-105847.jpg

We were careful but looked from every angle.

20140305-105923.jpg

We were in the forest valley in the mountains, we walked up in the shadow of the mountain behind us but could see the sun glowing on top of the one in front us, it certainly looked like the autumn fairies had been busy at work..

20140305-110034.jpg

We found real fairy seats…. Ice queen thrones maybe?

20140305-110113.jpg

Noah was the fairy king!

20140305-110234.jpg

The biggest girl led the littlest girl past the biggest beautiful tree ever.

20140305-110310.jpg

finally!! We found the smallest glint of evidence… some fairy dust. (Which I had sprinkled discreetly..shhh!)

20140305-110435.jpg

Then we found what we thought was a fairy house.

20140305-110943.jpg

And then just as we were getting towards the end of our walk we found a mushroom covered in what we could only describe as frost fairy fairy dust, it was icy blue.

20140305-111014.jpg

20140305-111042.jpg

We even found a plant that looked like it was a hairy fairy beard plant…. Very rare. Very very rare.

20140305-111114.jpg

Our frost fairy search was very fruitful! We found lots of evidence of fairies and had a great time exploring Talybont lower Blean waterfalls…. We stopped off on the way home to watch a beautiful sun set over Pen y Fan and planned our next adventure….

20140305-111317.jpg
