GIANT SURPRISE EGG ROLLING…

We decided that we wanted to make our own giant surprise egg, we used it as a sibling team building exercise & once we’d created our egg it was the kids mission to get it to the top of a huge hill intact so we could roll it back down…..everybody helped.

We made our egg by making an egg shaped structure using lengths of willow which I then covered with a plastic tape used to cordone things off (non sticky, available in pound shops).

We then covered the structure with chicken wire (not pictured!)

We finished by using rolls of wrapping paper and ample amounts of sticky tape to cover it before using coloured paper to add our detail.

We made a separate box for the surprise.

AND WE WERE READY!!

Noahs job was to carry the ‘Surprise’

whilst everyone else set about taking turns to carry the egg and using teamwork to carry it together..

We walked up under a beautiful blue sky which was slowy disappearing ….

and the sun began to set as we got to the top..

So we opened up the suprise which was full of chocolate eggs and ate them as the sun sunk..

And there was only one way down……rolling our egg!!

REDISCOVERING SEA DRAGON EGGS.

20140728-122523-44723829.jpg
We discovered sea dragon eggs once before and couldn’t believe our luck when we stumbled over them once again!

Here’s how we got on…

I secretly painted a hard boiled duck egg with sparkly nail varnish and when the kids weren’t looking I placed it in a nest made of seaweed in a small cove along the coast…

20140728-122558-44758445.jpg

20140728-122606-44766285.jpg
I made some dragon footprints leading from the sea shore to the nest..

20140728-122656-44816327.jpg

20140728-122706-44826338.jpg
I then sat on the picnic blanket whilst the kids set out to beach comb…

20140728-122808-44888827.jpg

20140728-122829-44909693.jpg
And then they reappeared from the rocks clutching something…

20140728-123055-45055211.jpg
It was a dragons egg!!!

20140728-123136-45096167.jpg
We examined it…

20140728-123238-45158897.jpgand sniffed it…

20140728-123301-45181502.jpgand Mila took me to see the dragon footprints they’d found..

20140728-123338-45218000.jpgNoah gave the it once over too…

FOSSIL HUNTING & DINOSAUR EGG ADVENTURE

20140422-100105.jpg

We decided to embark on a fossil excavating day at the beach. I made this magical by making a giant egg with plaster of Paris & a balloon for the kids to stumble upon.
We gathered together some excavating tools, a bucket containing a sieve, a paintbrush, some hammers and chisels and various tools for scraping, small paintbrushes, sticks and a plastic knife and headed to the beach…

Here’s how we got on…

The prep…

Whilst the kids slept I mixed some plaster of Paris and dipped baby wipes in it, I then coated two water filled balloons (to give the balloons weight and make them easier to work with) with the plaster soaked baby wipes leaving the knot exposed at the top, once dried I carefully cut the top off of the balloons and drained the water being careful not to wet the eggs and removed the balloons, I finished by dusting with a bit of black powder paint. I left the top open so the kids could see inside the egg and whatever had hatched out of it would be left to the imagination.

20140422-100959.jpg
We found a spot on a pebble beach and set up our excavation dig area…with cake

20140422-101048.jpg
The kids then headed off to explore and search for signs of fossils in the rocks..

20140422-101134.jpg
I secretly placed the dinosaur egg amongst the rocks ready for the kids to discover..

20140422-101238.jpg
We all set about hunting for fossils… Even Noah had a go..

20140422-101340.jpg
Then we found our first fossil and chipped and chiseled it out of the rock..

20140422-101435.jpg
Then the kids stumbled on the dinosaur egg!!!

20140422-101524.jpg

20140422-101559.jpg
After much discussion about what could of been in the egg it was back to the dig!!!

20140422-102213.jpg
And there was lots to find..

20140422-102313.jpg
We cracked open a rock and found a huge fossil! It looked like a dinosaur poop!!

20140422-102449.jpg
But we think it was a prehistoric shell..

20140422-102527.jpg

20140422-102614.jpg
With our loot excavated we spent the rest of the afternoon playing under the watchful eye of our prehistoric friends…

20140422-102733.jpg
Before gathering up our tools and heading home..

DRAGON HUNTING IN THE WOODS.

20140305-112839.jpg

With the aid of a few duck eggs which i paid 40p each for and a handwritten sign we embarked on a dragon hunt…The bigger children (7&9) were in on the Dragon hunt set up today & did really well making believe for Mila (4), they were rewarded with a find of some ‘real’ eggs from something unknown 🙂

Our hunt started at Ogmore castle, we crossed the stepping stones and headed into the woods to the ruins of CANDLESTON CASTLE/MERTHYR MAWR & it’s surrounding sand dunes. (South Wales)

Here’s how we got on…

We started at Ogmore castle where we walked across the treacherous waters via the stepping stones..

20140305-113254.jpg

Once we had explored Ogmore castle (free to enter) we got back in the car and headed 5 minutes up the road to Merthyr Mawr…

Once there i placed a sign I had made discreetly on a tree…

20140305-113506.jpg

The kids discovered the sign..

20140305-113540.jpg

and our dragon hunt began….

20140305-113616.jpg

I hid some hatched eggs in the wood

20140305-113701.jpg

20140305-113719.jpg

we carried on through the woods heading for the castle ruins..

20140305-113801.jpg

20140305-113814.jpg

As the kids explored the ruins I discreetly placed our dragon eggs!
I’d used duck eggs which i drew on and spray with hairspray and a dusting of glitter…

20140305-113942.jpg

As we explored the castle…

20140305-114010.jpg

WE STUMBLED ON THE DRAGON EGGS!!!

20140305-114051.jpg

AND THEN SOME MORE AS WE HEADED BACK THROUGH THE WOODS!!

20140305-114226.jpg

20140305-114233.jpg

We then headed for the sand dunes to search for anymore signs…

20140305-114313.jpg

And we found dragon footprints..

20140305-114349.jpg

and more eggs (real eggs this time!)

20140305-114454.jpg

We finished our day rolling down the dunes..

20140305-114532.jpg

We took our dragon eggs home and put them in the airing cupboard to keep warm, the next day we discovered one of the eggs had hatched and we now have a naughty dragon on the loose around the house….

20140305-114707.jpg

So rather than take any chances we returned to the woods with our other dragon egg and made a nest for it to sit in back within its natural environment…

20140305-114827.jpg

Out dragon hunt really was a magical adventure achieved with minimum effort for the price of a few duck eggs….

EGGS… NOT JUST FOR BOILING.

20140226-113611.jpg

We love a hearty breakfast…we love EGGS!!! Here’s some of the fun ways we enjoy our eggs…

20140226-113720.jpg

I used a permanent marker to draw on our eggs before boiling them.

20140226-113807.jpg

20140226-113947.jpg

20140226-113957.jpg

We learnt etiquette & elocution lessons starting with some food for thought with ‘Eggiquette eggs’ for breakfast…

20140226-114038.jpg

EGG’CELLENT VIBES.. (You should know by now that we like eggs for breakfast!) This morning in our mission to set everybody off on the right foot we had eggs for breakfast, we all chose words to write onto our eggs & I wrote the words with permanent marker pen before boiling them. Elis picked a joke, Mila decided on a nice rainbow message for me & I offered words of encouragement…. Hopefully it set them off with a belly fully of brekkie & a mind full of love topped up for the day ahead…

20140226-114204.jpg

We placed a raw egg in vinegar, it dissolved the egg shell completely leaving a bouncy egg in its membrane. Unfortunately Mila got excited at the experiment & bounced the egg a little too hard before I took a photo of it.

20140226-114259.jpg

We planted cress to make egg heads…

20140226-114415.jpg

Lastly we heard that you can stand on eggs without them breaking so we tried it and were successful!!

20140226-114523.jpg

I even decorated a duck egg so we could embark on a magical dragon hunt in the woods… With a discreet placement of our sign & eggs we had a EGGcellent day!
