OUTDOOR ALPHABET HUNT

We decided to go on an alphabet hunt & create our own ABC photo log.
We made some letters on a note book and used an iPhone to take our photos and add our text with a simple app.
Here’s some of the letters we found…

MAKING LAVA LAMPS

We wanted to make a lava so collected together the things we would need…

A plastic bottle
Cooking oil
Alkazeltzers
Food colouring

20140525-095033.jpg
Add vegetable oil to fill 2 thirds of your bottle.

20140525-095139.jpg
add water and leave about an inch at the top of the bottle.

20140525-095217.jpg
Add a few drops of food colouring, wait for the colouring to break through the oil to the water
.

20140525-095435.jpg
add about a quarter of an alka seltzer tablet to the bottle and watch… (make sure you leave the lid off as pressure will build up) add more tablets as and when desired or just pop the lid on and swish back and forth for a cool effect.

PREHISTORIC ICE AGE MELTDOWN CHALLENGE

20140405-085822.jpgWe decided we were going to make our own prehistoric ice age scene and attempt to save our prehistoric friends from the big freeze.
We had lots of fun and messy play with a little scientific education thrown in…
Here’s how we got on.

I froze some dinosaurs in a bowl to make our ice age lake..

20140405-090042.jpgI froze some smaller dinosaurs in plastic eggs and once frozen I ran them under a little warm water to loosen then from the egg case.

20140405-090145.jpg
I placed our diplodocus into a water filled ziplock bag before placing it into the freezer, once frozen I ran it under warm water to mould the ice around him..

20140405-090307.jpg
I then placed all our iced induced dinosaurs into a tray surrounded by soil and leaves.

20140405-090410.jpg
We then collected some kitchen household items to use to try and thaw our prehistoric friends from the big freeze!

20140405-090529.jpg
We tried with ketchup, vinegar, salt, baking powder and lemon juice along with banging, scraping, chipping and bashing…

20140405-090657.jpg

20140405-090704.jpg

20140405-090717.jpg
Finally with a little warm water our dinosaurs began to slowly escape..

20140405-090817.jpg
AND THEN THEY WERE FREE!!!

HILLSIDE ARTISTS (Fan Fawr Mountain, Brecon Beacons)

20140302-100741.jpg

Some people opt to paint the town red, we painted the hills green & became mobile artists masterpiece painters…. we found a beautiful spot & created our canvases’ of the world the way we see it…

We stopped for breakfast at the foot of Fan Fawr opposite the Storey Arms on the A470. Parking was free. We headed up onto the hill over the stile in the car park and followed the path on a horseshoe route bearing left as we climbed higher. It was a real treat and easily managed by the kids aged 15, 9, 7, & 4… We also had a baby in a back carrier. We wore walking boots, warm clothes and took a bottle of water & snacks. The route was very simple and the views were stunning, it was a beautiful example of some of The National Trust’s off the beaten track options.
We also took with us some simple canvases, paintbrushes, a paint pad and jar of water, we stopped halfway down and painted our view…

Here’s how we got on…

20140302-100823.jpg

Once parked we headed up the mountain stopping to look back to admire the views across to Pen y Fan/Corn Ddu.

20140302-100948.jpg

We could see our destination, Fan Fawr in front if us with a dusting if snow, we were accompanied by a beautiful blue sky…

20140302-101122.jpg

We walked along small streams laden with little waterfalls on the way up giving us opportunity to explore..

20140302-101252.jpg As we climbed higher the snow became thicker..

20140302-101327.jpg
And the views became more stunning…

20140302-101401.jpg
We even stopped to build a snowman.

20140302-101443.jpg

Nearing the top..

20140302-101523.jpg

The only footprints were ours..

20140302-101558.jpg

20140302-101614.jpg
We could see where the horseshoe bore to the left and the path that we would follow back down..

20140302-101712.jpg

20140302-101723.jpg

20140302-101736.jpg

We spent some time on the top before heading back down..

20140302-101840.jpg

20140302-101850.jpg

It was beautiful…

20140302-101942.jpg

We stopped half way down to paint our pictures of the views..

20140302-102031.jpg

20140302-102052.jpg

999 WHATS YOUR EMERGENCY? (Life saving activity for kids)

20140227-125235.jpg

**PLEASE NOTE THIS IS KETCHUP, NO ONE WAS HURT OR INJURED IN THE PROCESS OF THIS ACTIVITY** We decided to have a little role play fun & teach the kids how to call for help if ever they needed to. It was gory and fun and valuable lessons were learnt.’

Here’s what we did…

We made a chart of instructions to put by the phone..

20140227-124213.jpg

I collected together bandages and ketchup for our role play..

20140227-124310.jpg

I used post it’s to put different scenario situations around the house..

20140227-124336.jpg

Dopey bugger, someone left toys on the stairs and I fell down breaking my leg, I couldn’t move so Eden had to go for help.

20140227-124410.jpg

I set up a severed finger scenario..

The kids swiftly patched me up…

20140227-124452.jpg

I disconnected the phone so they could practice their 999 calling skills.

20140227-124522.jpg

20140227-124614.jpg

20140227-124627.jpg

20140227-124639.jpg

Mila practiced picking out 9 9 9

20140227-124721.jpg

Oh dear, I slipped when reaching into the cupboard and my foot became wedged in the toilet..

20140227-124746.jpg

I had an accident in the garden and was stuck beneath a fallen log…

20140227-124911.jpg

baby Noah thought it was tasty…

20140227-125002.jpg

Eden swiftly & calmly pretended to ring 999

20140227-125102.jpg

Mila practised bandaging..

20140227-125139.jpg

They were rewarded with medals in bravery & sensibility for their swift and responsible actions…

20140227-125216.jpg

This was a fun awareness raising activity to try and teach the kids to be calm and collected in an emergency situation. A week after we did this activity I sliced the end of my finger off on a piece of glass and fainted whilst alone with baby Noah and Mila 4, she held the phone receiver for me whilst I called for help and shortly afterwards when I fainted she went next door to raise the alarm and get help, so although we’d had fun and a giggle recreating these scenarios valuable lesson were learnt too…

ST PATRICKS DAY, AN IRISH THEMED DAY

We decided to celebrate St Patricks day by learning all about Ireland…. Here’s how we did it….

20140225-090835.jpg

We used empty baby food jars to make our St Patricks Day treats. We simply filled with Rolos & Skittles (gold & rainbow) & topped with marshmallows (a cloud)…. You could replace the skittles with smarties & serve as a bedtime treat with hot chocolate.

20140225-090951.jpg

We made some marshmallows dipped in chocolate for St Patricks day, we melted the chocolate and added a few drops of green food colouring, we then cut out some shamrock using green paper which we sticky taped to cocktail sticks, we finished off with a packet of smarties and some gold chocolate coins (you could use Rolos)

20140225-091047.jpg

We used a pepper cut in half to print shamrock patterns…

20140225-091134.jpg

We did a simple shamrock hunt in the woods & then found the gold at the end of the rainbow…

20140225-091218.jpg

We went searching for Shamrock, we found Clover which is in the same family.

20140225-091256.jpg

We made some Irish flags for our scene setting.

20140225-091332.jpg

We used a roll of rainbow wrapping paper to make our rainbow over the table and we cut out white clouds…

20140225-091407.jpg

We used an old bottle that we filled with lime milkshake for breakfast..

20140225-091443.jpg

For breakfast we had a fruit rainbow with yoghurt clouds and a shortbread biscuit.

20140225-091515.jpg

We made place settings with cardboard.

20140225-091550.jpg

We bought some traditional Irish food.

20140225-091641.jpg

We made Irish stew..

20140225-091729.jpg

We had our own yummy rainbow…

20140225-091759.jpg

We looked at our globe to find out where Ireland is…

20140225-091904.jpg

‘Lucky scratch cards’ I drew a design on a piece of card, I then mixed a few drops of washing up liquid with a small amount of silver acrylic paint. I covered the part of the scratch card design I wanted to be scratched with sticky tape and then painted over it, once dry our scratch cards were ready to try our luck

20140225-092013.jpg

To finish our day us adults had a traditional taste of Ireland 🙂

BUILDING A BEAR LAIR.

20140211-142257.jpg

Today we decided to make an under table bear lair, we have the school bear home to visit so we thought we would take the opportunity to help him feel at home….. Here’s how we did it…

20140211-141759.jpg

We started by gathering sheets & cushions, we painted paw prints on the floor where the entrance would be…

20140211-141913.jpg

We used a smaller table that would act as our cave entrance and we used parcel tape to attach battery operated fairy lights to the cave roof..

20140211-142401.jpg

We placed some cushions over the table & entrance and then covered with the sheets..

20140211-142522.jpg

We placed some leaves, fake flowers & pebbles around our cave…

20140211-142627.jpg

We made honey bear sandwiches with a bear cookie cutter & had Pom bear crisps for our undertable picnic.

20140211-142750.jpg

And the we crawled under the table to eat…

20140211-142833.jpg

Not forgetting to take our bear!!!!

FRIDGE FACTS

Sometimes children learn without even realising it, relying on the fact that the brain is like a sponge I wanted to try & input some knowledge into them & in a fun & not overly obvious way….

My resolution for this year is to teach my children a new fact every single day. I am achieving this with the introduction of ‘FRIDGE FACTS’ and it’s as simple as it sounds…
Each night before I go to bed I write a fact on a piece of paper and stick it to the fridge ready for them to start off their day whilst they open the door and reach for the milk. I gathered the fridge gets quite a lot of their attention so it would be a good place to start.

At the end of the year we will gather all our facts together & test our knowledge.

Feel free to share any of our fridge facts with your little people, or even let us know your own…
