GLASTONBURY TOR

20140429-111636.jpg
This iconic and luring landmark that watches over Glastonbury town has magnificent views of the Somerset Levels, Dorset, Wiltshire and Wales…on a clear day you can see the site of Glastonbury festival and the North Somerset coastline..

Steeped in history and legend, excavations at the top of the Tor have revealed the plans of two superimposed churches of St Michael, of which only a 15th-century tower remains.

Glastonbury Tor is known as being one of the most spiritual sites in the country. Its pagan beliefs are still very much celebrated. It’s a beautiful place to walk and only take around 20 minutes to reach the top and is an idyllic place to watch the sun descend…

We’ve visited many times in all seasons… Head for Glastonbury town and you’ll find ample parking, the Tor itself is a free place to visit with ample outstanding natural beauty surrounding it…

BREAN DOWN EXPLORATION.

20140429-095701.jpg

We headed out to Brean Down on the Somerset coast line. The down is 1.5 miles long and 100m above sea level at its highest point and nestled between two beautiful beaches, Weston Super Mare and Brean Sands.
Our adventure was to walk to the end of the Down to visit Brean Fort, built in 1870 as part of a chain of Forts along the Bristol Channel to protect against the French invasion. The Fort is steeped in history and the the kids loved exploring it’s well intact remains including the site of a Roman Temple, an Iron Age hill fort and WW2 machine gun emplacement point.
Best of all… It’s free to explore!!
We visited at the end of May and the Down was carpeted in Bluebells and seemed to be a haven for caterpillars and birds.

Our starting was the National Trust carpark (£2 parking and cafe/shop/toilet facilities) overlooking Brean sands beach,
Brean Down Road
Burnham-on-Sea
TA8
England

Our walk took us a leisurely 2.5 hours, here’s how we got on ….

We started in the car park and headed up the steps to the top of the Down…

20140429-095817.jpg
After a steep climb we stopped to look back at the view..

20140429-095855.jpg
We came across a WW2 machine emplacement..

20140429-095947.jpg
We discover the Down carpeted in Bluebells..

20140429-100047.jpg
and we headed off to the furthest point out to sea in search of the Fort…

20140429-100226.jpg
We took time to look back at the view back over Somerset.

20140429-100326.jpg
The flowers were beautiful..

20140429-100740.jpg
It was an ideal place for a bug hunt..

20140429-100809.jpg

20140429-100804.jpg
We then found the thought and explored..

20140429-100916.jpg

20140429-100930.jpg

20140429-100946.jpg
There were lots of nooks and crannies to explore..

20140429-101045.jpg
Or just to sit and contemplate..

20140429-101129.jpg

20140429-101136.jpg
We then discovered the remains of the search light tower at the very tip of the down..

20140429-101252.jpg

20140429-101301.jpg
We scrambled across the rocks for a closer look..

20140429-101351.jpg
We climbed up into the search light tower and looked back at where we had came from.

20140429-101448.jpg
After eating our picnic we headed back across the Brean..

20140429-101544.jpg

Our walk was a beautiful one and full of exciting places to discover and explore, we finished our walk where we had started and bought ice creams from the shop and played on the beach..we will most certainly be revisiting this gorgeous spot to spend more time there…

RUSSIAN DOLLS

20140426-082600.jpg

I collected some cardboard boxes of different sizes, you can do this on any scale, supersize would be cool. We made sure they all fit loosely into each other and then set about painting them. We used white emulsion to cover the boxes to give us a good base to add colour, once dried i carefully cut the heads off making sure that on the last box i only cut 3 sides so we could have a securing flip top. Then we used normal crayola paint to add colur. (You could use more permanent paint if you wanted to make them waterproof)….simple and effective and a good project, you could get creative and do different characters, Dr Who, Star wars, Ben and Holly, spongebob, your family etc… you could even do a different design on each side. We love our Russian dolls.

We headed outdoors on a camping trip to make these..
Here’s how they turned out…

We set about painting the base coat with a tub of white emulsion we had in the shed.

20140426-082716.jpg

Baby Noah helped too.

20140426-082815.jpg
and got mucky….

20140426-082848.jpg
…very mucky!!

20140426-082911.jpg

we left our boxes to dry.

20140426-082936.jpg

once dry i carefully cut around the tops,on the biggest box i only cut 3 sides and then just scored the 4th side to create a flap type lid.

20140426-083009.jpg

we put the boxes back inside each other.

20140426-083035.jpg

and headed for home.

20140426-083101.jpg
we then set about painting our design. I drew the design with marker pen and showed the smallest members of Family Days where to paint. I kept the design bold and chunky with a basic pattern to make it easier for them.

20140426-083145.jpg

Eden, 8, did the more intricate painting.

20140426-083214.jpg

we put the lids on…. noah took them off again.

20140426-083258.jpg

so i snapped quickly. CHEESE. very proud kiddies.

PIZZA FUN

20140425-202240.jpg

Pizza doesn’t have to be round to taste yummy!
We used packet pizza base mix that just require water to make and then added a tomato sauce and our choice of toppings to our shapes…

Here’s some different ways to enjoy them…

We made our shapes…

20140425-201816.jpg

Added our toppings..

20140425-201944.jpg

‘FROZEN’ GLACIER EDIBLE MINT ICE CASTLE

20140425-112235.jpg

This yummy activity requires a substantial amount of imagination, lol, we had a vision of an amazing castle of ice shards…. Instead this is how it turned out. We may have bitten off more than we could chew but the girls loved making it and the fun was not only in the trying but also in the devouring afterwards 🙂

I think next time we’ll stick to building Olaf 😉

Here’s how our FROZEN Elsa’ castle turned out…

20140425-112337.jpg

I placed the glacier mints on a tray and put them in the oven at 190c for a few minutes, I watched during this time to make sure they didn’t burn.

20140425-112424.jpg

Once out of the oven I left to cool for a few minutes to harden and then smudged some blue food colouring on the top, I returned to the oven for a few minutes for the colouring to absorb into the mint.

20140425-112452.jpg

Once cooled the kids broke the mints into shards along with the chocolate.

20140425-112523.jpg

We used a glass for our mountain to place our ice castle on.

20140425-112553.jpg

I melted some chocolate in a pan over hot water and cover our glass to form the rock of our mountain.

20140425-112619.jpg

We made our staircase by gently heating one side of our glacier mints over a flame and once a little soften pressing them onto a lollipop stick.

20140425-112645.jpg

We used icing to glue our glacier ice shards and chocolate to the top of our glass, we put a marshmallow in the middle to hold it together.

20140425-112717.jpg
The girls were really pleased with the results…

GARDEN FAIRY POST BOX

20140425-111126.jpg

Imagine finding you have a magical garden fairy mail post box in your garden! All little people will love checking out this secret box each day & finding their very own personal letter from the fairies!

I made this enchanting post box by simply covering a matchbox with coloured paper & celloptape to make it reasonably waterproof, it’s an ideal way to send letters to children directly from the appreciation fairies to congratulate good behaviour, sharing abilities or bravery…. Or just for love ❤️

You could combine it with an adventure into the woods and discover it there, ours was made as a gift for two special little girls…
