KIDS RAP BATTLING

20140228-213241.jpg

The kids decided they wanted to have a rap battle, so we set about making our own boom box and decks, we used empty boxes to do this. We took our guitar, play station microphones & our decks (play station dj hero & our original 1970’s FISHERPRICE record player)….

We found a perfect spot for our battle…

Here’s how we did..

PICTURE FRAME FUN

20140228-210548.jpg
Today we headed to the beach, we took with us an old empty picture frame & sharpie marker pen…

The beach was ‘Bracelet bay’ in The Mumbles, South Wales.

Here’s what we did…

999 WHATS YOUR EMERGENCY? (Life saving activity for kids)

20140227-125235.jpg

**PLEASE NOTE THIS IS KETCHUP, NO ONE WAS HURT OR INJURED IN THE PROCESS OF THIS ACTIVITY** We decided to have a little role play fun & teach the kids how to call for help if ever they needed to. It was gory and fun and valuable lessons were learnt.’

Here’s what we did…

We made a chart of instructions to put by the phone..

20140227-124213.jpg

I collected together bandages and ketchup for our role play..

20140227-124310.jpg

I used post it’s to put different scenario situations around the house..

20140227-124336.jpg

Dopey bugger, someone left toys on the stairs and I fell down breaking my leg, I couldn’t move so Eden had to go for help.

20140227-124410.jpg

I set up a severed finger scenario..

The kids swiftly patched me up…

20140227-124452.jpg

I disconnected the phone so they could practice their 999 calling skills.

20140227-124522.jpg

20140227-124614.jpg

20140227-124627.jpg

20140227-124639.jpg

Mila practiced picking out 9 9 9

20140227-124721.jpg

Oh dear, I slipped when reaching into the cupboard and my foot became wedged in the toilet..

20140227-124746.jpg

I had an accident in the garden and was stuck beneath a fallen log…

20140227-124911.jpg

baby Noah thought it was tasty…

20140227-125002.jpg

Eden swiftly & calmly pretended to ring 999

20140227-125102.jpg

Mila practised bandaging..

20140227-125139.jpg

They were rewarded with medals in bravery & sensibility for their swift and responsible actions…

20140227-125216.jpg

This was a fun awareness raising activity to try and teach the kids to be calm and collected in an emergency situation. A week after we did this activity I sliced the end of my finger off on a piece of glass and fainted whilst alone with baby Noah and Mila 4, she held the phone receiver for me whilst I called for help and shortly afterwards when I fainted she went next door to raise the alarm and get help, so although we’d had fun and a giggle recreating these scenarios valuable lesson were learnt too…

ST DAVIDS DAY / WELSH THEMED DAY

20140226-230611.jpg

We LOVE Wales, & being Welsh gives us a great opportunity to celebrate St David’s Day, we decided to embark on a Welsh themed day, here’s what we did….

Firstly we set about scene setting got our traditional welsh tea…

20140226-231107.jpg

‘Pot of leeks’ we rolled up pieces of paper into tubes, we then made slits in the end with scissors and painted them green. We put them in a garden flower pot to make a nice centre piece for our Welsh themed table.

Next we made love spoons…

20140226-231219.jpg

We bought wooden spoons for 24p each & decorated them .

Then we made cardboard cut outs to hang on the wall…

20140226-231501.jpg

We made some daffodil hangers by folding a piece of paper like a concertina & drawing a simple template of a daffodil, we cut the daffodil out and folded the paper back out, after painting them we hung them to make pretty displays.

20140226-231547.jpg

We used a roll of wrapping paper which we drew a welsh scene on, we taped it to the wall and painted it. We then used cardboard to make the window frame… We finished off by making a vase of daffodils to go on the sill.

20140226-231659.jpg

We drew pictures of traditional welsh costume and hung them with our love spoons..

20140226-231758.jpg

We learnt some welsh words and discovered where Wales is on the atlas..

20140226-231851.jpg

20140226-231906.jpg

We then went to the supermarket to buy welsh foods for our tea…

20140226-232002.jpg

We mixed together all our ingredients to make a dough, we then cooked our cakes in a frying pan over a medium heat, we cooked each side for a few minutes until brown…. We finished with a dusting of caster sugar.
225g/8oz self-raising flour, sieved
110g/4oz (preferably Welsh) salted butter
1 egg
handful of sultanas
milk, if needed
85g/3oz caster sugar
extra butter, for greasing

20140226-232051.jpg

Welsh rarebit.

20140226-232227.jpg

20140226-232238.jpg

And we bought some yummy welsh fudge..& daffodils

20140226-232318.jpg

We made some welsh hats to hang using card and paper doilies…

20140226-232417.jpg

We found some welsh slate and coal whilst walking in the valleys…

20140226-232514.jpg

And we were ready to put together our tea…. We set the table and made a menu using out hats and chalk, and we got dressed in our traditional dress…

20140226-232650.jpg

20140226-232702.jpg

20140226-232726.jpg

After tea we watched some of the tv programmes that I watched as a child growing up in Wales….

EGGS… NOT JUST FOR BOILING.

20140226-113611.jpg

We love a hearty breakfast…we love EGGS!!! Here’s some of the fun ways we enjoy our eggs…

20140226-113720.jpg

I used a permanent marker to draw on our eggs before boiling them.

20140226-113807.jpg

20140226-113947.jpg

20140226-113957.jpg

We learnt etiquette & elocution lessons starting with some food for thought with ‘Eggiquette eggs’ for breakfast…

20140226-114038.jpg

EGG’CELLENT VIBES.. (You should know by now that we like eggs for breakfast!) This morning in our mission to set everybody off on the right foot we had eggs for breakfast, we all chose words to write onto our eggs & I wrote the words with permanent marker pen before boiling them. Elis picked a joke, Mila decided on a nice rainbow message for me & I offered words of encouragement…. Hopefully it set them off with a belly fully of brekkie & a mind full of love topped up for the day ahead…

20140226-114204.jpg

We placed a raw egg in vinegar, it dissolved the egg shell completely leaving a bouncy egg in its membrane. Unfortunately Mila got excited at the experiment & bounced the egg a little too hard before I took a photo of it.

20140226-114259.jpg

We planted cress to make egg heads…

20140226-114415.jpg

Lastly we heard that you can stand on eggs without them breaking so we tried it and were successful!!

20140226-114523.jpg

I even decorated a duck egg so we could embark on a magical dragon hunt in the woods… With a discreet placement of our sign & eggs we had a EGGcellent day!

LLYN Y FAN FACH GLACIAL LAKE. (BRECON BEACONS)

20140226-085314.jpg

Our first love is exploring as a family & living in Wales gives us great opportunity, we do this with our children, 2,5,8,10 & 16 in tow, we endeavour to make our walking magical & exciting for the kids..

We like cake & beautiful views.

Llyn y Fan Fach is a glacial lake surrounded by spectacular and gorgeous views, nestled in the mountains, its dark waters give rise to a century old legend of the lady of the lake. We walked 1.5 miles up a track from the car park to discover the lake. Its waters filled a hollow eroded by a glacier during the last ice age that ended 11.500 years ago.

Our walked took us 4 hours of gentle strolling, playing in the river and around an hours stop at the lake for tea and cake. There is also the option to walk further on up onto the Carmarthen fans for a ridge walk, we opted against this today.

Here’s how our walk went…

We found a wheelbarrow which the kids used to play mean machines with a beautiful view..

20140226-085811.jpg

20140226-085821.jpg

Some of us got more muddy than others…

20140226-085858.jpg

20140226-085906.jpg

20140226-085917.jpg

20140226-074603.jpg

We headed to the beach to watch the Autumn sun set & not wanting the day to end we decided to reach for the sun… We took some pictures to keep the sunset forever…

20140226-074158.jpg

We spent the afternoon collecting pebbles & playing in our pop up tent…

20140226-074304.jpg

And as the sun descended we played with making silhouettes

ST PATRICKS DAY, AN IRISH THEMED DAY

We decided to celebrate St Patricks day by learning all about Ireland…. Here’s how we did it….

20140225-090835.jpg

We used empty baby food jars to make our St Patricks Day treats. We simply filled with Rolos & Skittles (gold & rainbow) & topped with marshmallows (a cloud)…. You could replace the skittles with smarties & serve as a bedtime treat with hot chocolate.

20140225-090951.jpg

We made some marshmallows dipped in chocolate for St Patricks day, we melted the chocolate and added a few drops of green food colouring, we then cut out some shamrock using green paper which we sticky taped to cocktail sticks, we finished off with a packet of smarties and some gold chocolate coins (you could use Rolos)

20140225-091047.jpg

We used a pepper cut in half to print shamrock patterns…

20140225-091134.jpg

We did a simple shamrock hunt in the woods & then found the gold at the end of the rainbow…

20140225-091218.jpg

We went searching for Shamrock, we found Clover which is in the same family.

20140225-091256.jpg

We made some Irish flags for our scene setting.

20140225-091332.jpg

We used a roll of rainbow wrapping paper to make our rainbow over the table and we cut out white clouds…

20140225-091407.jpg

We used an old bottle that we filled with lime milkshake for breakfast..

20140225-091443.jpg

For breakfast we had a fruit rainbow with yoghurt clouds and a shortbread biscuit.

20140225-091515.jpg

We made place settings with cardboard.

20140225-091550.jpg

We bought some traditional Irish food.

20140225-091641.jpg

We made Irish stew..

20140225-091729.jpg

We had our own yummy rainbow…

20140225-091759.jpg

We looked at our globe to find out where Ireland is…

20140225-091904.jpg

‘Lucky scratch cards’ I drew a design on a piece of card, I then mixed a few drops of washing up liquid with a small amount of silver acrylic paint. I covered the part of the scratch card design I wanted to be scratched with sticky tape and then painted over it, once dry our scratch cards were ready to try our luck

20140225-092013.jpg

To finish our day us adults had a traditional taste of Ireland 🙂

WORRY GRUBS

20140224-175351.jpg

We decided to make some worry grubs in an attempt to take any worries away we may have. We used air dry clay wrapped with wool and a matchstick box. You could also use pebbles or small sticks.

Here’s how we did it…

20140224-175421.jpg

We got together our clay, wool, matchstick box and a toothpick to sculpt our grubs faces…

20140224-175528.jpg

We started by rolling our clay into a grub like shape..

20140224-175620.jpg

Then we wrapped our wool around our grub and tied to secure it…

20140224-175710.jpg

We lined our boxes with a piece of material…

20140224-175758.jpg

And our worry grubs were ready!!!!

When we go to bed we shall whisper any worries we have to our grubs and place them under our pillow…. Our grubs will then take our worries away..
